Day 4 of #21DaysofPrayerandFasting
Cleanliness is next to godliness.
We’ve been doing a deep clean on our house, and while I was scrubbing the baseboards this phrase came to my mind. I’ve always thought it sounded a bit pretentious, like something your parent would tell you before saying, “Now clean up your room.”
But yesterday it occurred to me that I wasn’t begrudgingly cleaning, I was joyfully cleaning. Every time I dust, vacuum, mop, and scrub my house—when my mind and heart are in the right place—I’m thankful. It’s an act of thanksgiving to care for the blessing that God has given me. This lovely place that He’s provided to give us shelter and refuge from the world. Though humble and without fancy finishings, it’s beautiful because it’s our piece of the world. And it’s full of His presence.
Now that phrase takes on a whole new meaning—Cleanliness is next to godliness because a grateful heart draws us closer to Him.
